Sherlock Enua Memorial Mixed Pairs Sunday 15 November 2009


The Nikao Dart Club are running the Sherlock Enua Memorial Mixed Pairs on Sunday, 15th November 2009 at 10 am at their clubrooms above the bowling club at Gribblehurst Park, Sandringham Road, Mt Eden. Entry is $30 per pair. First prize is $500. Qualifying is a rolling draw with three wins from five to qualify. The knockout round is best of five and the final best of seven. For non-qualifiers there is a consolation round with a $100 first price. Organisers are Kid 027 448 6063 or Girl 264 1639 and 021 101 7572.

Wazza Wins Oceanic Masters


Warren Parry won the Oceanic Masters for the third time yesterday at the Otahuhu Working Men's Club, Auckland by defeating Preston Ridd in the final 7 to 1. This is the third time that Warren has won this title and it will be the third time he will travel to England to play in the PDC world championships. No New Zealander has got past the first round of this prestigious championship but Warren has come the closest. All Warren's expenses are to be paid and even if he looses his first round match he receives 6000 pound in prize money.

Sixteen players qualified for the main round. They were John Sinclair, Shane Tichowitsch (Aus), Richie Komene, Stan Motutere (Aus), Warren Parry, Barry Kapa, Steve MacArthur (Aus), John Dodunski, Preston Ridd, Mick Lacey, Rob Szabo, Richart Te Whero, Warren French, Toko Hazel, Bernie Smith and Craig Caldwell.

Warren's closest game was in the semi final against John Sinclair. John was in fine form in the first two legs winning with first a 161 finish then double eight. The third leg become pivotal when John on 61 hit triple 15 and missed two darts at double eight. Warren won that leg and seemed to go to another level winning 5 legs in a row before John pulled one back to make the score 5 to 3. In the next leg both Warren and John had trouble hitting the final double with Warren prevailing after several turns. John had played well scoring three 180's but it wasn't enough.

Bernie Smith Wins DPNZ and DPA Open


Bernie Smith of New Zealand defeated Steve MacArthur of Australia in the final of the DPNZ and DPA Open yesterday at the Otahuhu Working Men's Club 6 to 1. The open was a warm-up for today's Oceanic Masters where the winning player gets entry in to the PDC world championship in London in December.

There were only 30 players but it was a top quality field and no easy games. There were 16 that qualified for the main round and some extremely good players who did not qualify. The qualifiers were John Sinclair, Shane Tichowitsch ( Aus), Dean McGladdery (Aus), Steve MacArthur (Aus), Bernie Smith, Bill Fergus, Richie Komene, Warren Parry, Rob Szabo, Preston Ridd, Tony Lee, Warren French, Richard Te Whero, John Dudunski Craig Caldwell and Tom Williams.

In the final Bernie was in top form while Steve's form from the earlier rounds had faded. He could not quite find the triple 20 with any consistency. Bernie had several great finishes and finished the last leg on 92 by hitting the bull, a single 10 and double 16.

Australia 11 New Zealand 10


The Australian Dart Players team have defeated the NZ Club NZ team 11 to 10 last night at the Otahuhu Working men's Club. Australia was represented by Steve MacArthur (Captain), Shane Tichowitsch, Daniel Smith and Dean McGladdery. New Zealand was represented by Phil Hazel (Captain), Bernie Smith, Preston Ridd and Craig Caldwell.

After a round robin of pairs only Phil Hazel and Preston Ridd had recorded a win for the kiwis. The score was 3 to 1 in favour of Australia. After a round robin of singles the score was 10 all. Craig Caldwell was the most successful kiwi in the singles having three wins. He also scored back to back 180's in his game against Steve MacArthur. The seventh dart hit a single one ending the possibility of a 9 darter.

A team game of one leg of 1001 was played to decide the winner. The kiwis had the advantage when Phil Hazel won the bull and the right to start first. The scores were neck and neck with the kiwis just in front. NZ were on 16 when Australia went out on 85. Dean Gladdery hit triple 2, triple 13 and double tops to seal the win.

At 2pm today a singles tournament is to be held at the venue with a $500 first prize as a warm up for the Oceanic Masters tomorrow.


Top Flights Wild Card Tournament Cancelled

Topl Flights Committee organisers Dennis Hancock and Peter Hunt have announced that the wild card tournament planned for Saturday 31st October has been cancelled. They have been unable to secure the finances required to successfully host the 2010 Top Flights tournament. They are working hard to hold the tournament at a later date and to source the $15,000 required.

Counties 8 West City 6


Counties Manukau Darts association have beaten West City Darts Association 8 to 6 today at the Bellbird Arms, Manurewa to retain the Rene Stacey Shield by winning the last two singles. Coming to the last two games the score was 6 all. Jim Hennah and Peter Page for West City and Oz Crane and Rod Penney of Counties played the last single matches with Counties winning both. If West City had managed one win it would have led to a deciding team game but this was not to be.

The Counties team was John Sinclair, Tere Tou, Sonny Matekuare, Phil Cave, Sam Bryant, Hordie McKinnon, Oz Crane and Rod Penney. The West City team was Monty Tuhua, Stephen Holt, Mike Day, Paul Williams, Brevis Herbert, Dean Webster, Jim Hennah and Peter Page.

The previous evening Counties lost the Ben Hill trophy to Palmerston North darts Association in a close game. West City were to be the next challenger this 8th November. That challenge may not now take place as Palmerston have the right to refuse and not have a challenge to 2010. Paul Williams, President of West City said " We still hope to have the challenge but it is out of our hands and its up to Palmerston North as to whether our challenge is accepted".

West City Ladies Defend Shield


West City Ladies team today played the Onehunga Dart Club ladies in an A.P.D.E. Ladies Challenge Shield match at their Ranui club rooms. West City won the match 9 to 5. The match was tied 5 all up until the last 4 singles games were played. West City won those last 4 games to win their first defence of the shield since winning against the Auckland Cook Island Ladies team in September.

The West City team was Peggy Wikaira (Captain), Barbara Herbert, Rita Wells, Lou Williams, Loreta Hunter, Maine Ngametua, Sarah Joseph and Gail Oliver. The Onehunga Ladies were Sally Tamarua, Linda Newcomb, Ivy Makahili, Flo Te Paki, Julie Palalagi, Linda Henry, Ma Dalton and Taati Yukich.

The next challenge game is against South Auckland Darts Association on 8th November at West City.

Ray and Peggy Win APDE Over 50's


Ray Tonga and Peggy Wikaira have won the Auckland provincial dart executive men's and ladies over 50 singles today at the Te Papapa Bowling Club, Captain Springs Road, Onehunga both winning 3 nil in their individual finals. Ray faced Marsh Tamatea while Peggy faced Ruth Blackwell. Ray started the last leg with a 160 start while Peggy in her last leg threw a 16 darter with a 180. Ray beat Dinx Cassidy in the semi-final and Peggy beat Bubs Sylva in her semi final.

Other players to score 180 were Les McFarlane and Marsh Tamatea. Next year the event is scheduled to be held in Hamilton.

Tony Lee Wins ADA Open singles


Tony Lee of the Tupapa club has won the Auckland Darts Association Open singles yesterday at the Mangere Bowling Club, Mangere by defeating Barry Kapa in the final 3 to 1. In the final Tony scored two 180's and had a finish of 133 in the last leg.

On the way to the final Tony defeated Peter Page and Sonny Matekurae whilst Barry defeated Junior Tuatea.
In the ladies singles Maria Siavale of the TS club was the winner.

David and Kristal Win Under 24's Mixed Pairs.


David Day and Kristal McDermott of the West City darts Association have won the New Zealand Dart Council under 24's mixed pairs yesterday at the Wellington Darts Association club rooms, Ruahine Street, Kilbirnie, Wellington. They defeated Teinaki Metua and Denise Hakeagatoa of the South Auckland Darts Association in the final 3 to 1. David was particularly accurate on his doubles hitting most first dart.

Later in the day David Day and Brent McLuckie made the last 8 in the men's pairs while Kristal made the last sixteen in the Ladies singles.

Today Denise Hakeagatoa and Dawn Unuka of South Auckland Darts have won the ladies pairs.
TK Pitomaki of South Auckland darts was runner-up in the men's singles. David and Brent failed to qualify.

Sunday News Mixed Threes Won by Anna, Rob and Mike


Anna Neho and Rob Szabo of Wellington and Mike Day a former Wellingtonian but now of Auckland have won the Sunday News Mixed Three's on Sunday afternoon at the West City Darts Association hall in Ranui by defeating the Auckland three of Tere Tou, John Sinclair and Annie Sinclair 4 to 2. They won $1200 in prize money. It was a very close contest and a high standard of darts.

There were 42 entries which was a record number and 20 qualifiers. John Sinclair had the most men's 180's with seven. John scored four of these in the semi final match against Dianne Fergus, Bill Fergus and Jamie Smith. The consolation was won by last year's main round winners Ray Evans, Kerri Joyce and Cyndric Joyce when they defeated Rogere Te Whero, Richard Te Whero and Ron Glavish.

Richard Te Whero Wins Mens Auckland Open


Richard Te Whero of the Cosmos Darts Association has won the Auckland Men's Open earlier this evening at the West City Darts Association and $1,000 worth of prize money defeating Mike Day 4 to 1. Richard's winning legs were 22,21, 18 and 18 darts. Mike's winning leg was 23 darts. Richard defeated Jamie Smith, Whitu Taylor, Steve Gooch and John Sinclair on the way to the final. Mike defeated Tukina Weko, Lou Tai, Wilson Henry and Lucas Edwards on the way to the final. Richard usually plays with glasses but had left them at home. It was rather remarkable that he could still see the board clearly enough to be so accurate in his throwing.
There were 70 entries and 36 qualifiers. Mike Day scored the most 180's with 7. Thirty seven were scored in total. Brian Steed had the highest finish of 123.
The most astounding effort of the day goes to Bailey Mathews of the Cosmos Club. Bailey is aged only 10 years. He managed to qualify and then win his opening match against Damian Robson to make the last 16 where he was defeated by Lucas Edwards. By making the last 16 Bailey would have received a NZ Dart Council ranking point and will be the youngest player to ever do so. His older brother Casey, aged 15 years, had to settle with winning the consolation round.
Paul Williams, West City Darts Association President, stated " We have had 114 entries total in the men's and ladies events. This is a record for the event and we intend to apply to the NZ Dart Council to be World ranked which would make the tournament bigger again next year."

Denise Walker wins Auckland Ladies Open


Denise Walker formerly of West Auckland now resident in Queensland, Australia has returned to New Zealand on holiday and won the Auckland Ladies Open earlier today at the West City Darts hall, Ranui beating Gail Taylor of Waihi in the final 4 to 2 and taking home $600 in prize money. On the way to the final Denise showed fine form with consistant scoring and finishing to beat Sandra Mathews, Peggy Wikaira and Bubs Sylva all of Auckland. Gail defeated Gerry McDonald and Jo Kinita on her way to the final.
There were 44 entries and 23 qualifiers. The highest finish of the day was Peggy with 145. Mayreen Tai, Diane Fergus and Maria Kokiri scored 180's. This was the most entries since the Auckland Open started 4 years ago. The tournament is New Zealand Dart Council ranked.

APDE Men's pairs Won by John and Sam


John Sinclair and Sam Bryant of Counties-Manukau won the APDE men's pairs today at the West City Darts Association hall in Ranui defeating Sonny Harris and Tony Lee of ADA in the final 3-2. The first leg was finished by Sam on double 7 and took 24 darts. The second leg was finished by Tony on 68 again in 24 darts. The third leg was won by John and Sam in 22 darts. The fourth leg won by Sonny and Tony in 21 darts. This was the best leg of the final. The final leg was rather tension filled and had the worst darts. Both pairs could have won and had their chances but it was John and Sam who prevailed when Sam hit double 16 with the 29th dart.


The men's highest start was 170 by John Sinclair. The highest finish was 142 by Brendon Deed. The most 180's were by Sonny Harris with two. A special prize was given to Bailey Mathews, aged 10 and his brother Casey Mathews, aged 15 for qualifying and being the youngest qualifiers.

APDE Ladies Pairs Won By Peggy and Lou




Peggy Wikaira and Lou Williams of West City Darts Association won the APDE Ladies pairs earlier today at the West City Darts Association Ranui defeating Malia Ioane and Liz Enva of ADA in the final 3 to 1. Peggy and Lou were undefeated all day. Peggy also won the prize of highest start with 146. Maria Siavale had the highest finish of the day with 143. Gail Olliver had the first 180.

Lorene and Ken Win APDE Singles


Lorene Earnshaw and Ken Moir have won the APDE Ladies and Men's singles on Sunday at the West City Darts association club rooms, Ranui. Lorene won the Ladies final against Paeru Ngatuakana 3 to 1. Ken won the Men's final against Tama Kiliyu 3 to nil. The best leg in the men's final was a 19 darter by Ken. The best finish in the ladies final was 95 by Paeru.


There were 72 players participating. Chris Robson, Mal Berry and John Sinclair had the highest start for the men of 160. Rogere Te Whero had the highest start of 152 for the ladies. Mike Collett had the highest finish for the men of 160. Lou Williams had the highest finish of 116 for the ladies. Players to score 180 were Maxine Taaka, Lorene Earnshaw, Jason George, Robert Grant, Graham McElroy, John Dodunski x 3, Ken Moir x 2, Teinaki Metua, Rod Henry, Greville Hurst x 2, Lloyd Tuck, Mal Berry, Paul Williams and John Sinclair.


The next event at the West City club rooms is the APDE men's and ladies pairs on 13th September 2009.

Steve Holt Wins Club Night Singles


Steve Holt beat Peggy Wikaira On Thursday night at the West City Darts Association club night singles final 2-0. Steve beat Brevis Herbert to get to the final and Peggy beat Mike Day. There were 18 entries. This was a warm-up for the A.P.D.E. singles which are to be held at the club this Sunday. This tournament will involve players from throughout Auckland and from as far away as Hamilton.


On the way to the final Peggy scored two 180's and Steve scored a 124 finish. Others to score the maximum were Mike Day with two and Kevin Benjamin.
