Phil Taylor to Tour Australia

Absolutely fantastic news from Dart Players Australia today, Phil Taylor, 15 time world Champion is coming to Australia in August and will be attending and playing at some events in the Gold Coast Festival of darts.

There was a rumour going about that he would be going but nothing was confirmed. This is the first time for him in this part of the world and is a real coup for Kevin Berlyn and the people at Dart Players Australia. Well done.

I am excited because I and Peggy have already booked for the the DPNZ tour to the Golden Festival of Darts. There were 42 seats all up but they may be more than half gone now. If you want to go and need all the details e-mail Dale Frampton at The details of Phil Taylor's tour are on the Dart Players Australia site. If you cannot get hold of Dale quickly enough e-mail me at and I will send you the info I have on the tour. The cost from Auckland with flights, accommodation ( 7 days), van hire and tournament entries was about $1200 .

Des Heavey Memorial Mixed Pairs 7/4/12

Central Region Big Three Tournaments

Players from all over the country and Australia had another great weekend of darts at 'Central Regions Big Three' with the hosts once again being Timaru South Cosmopolitan club and the Waimate Town and Country Club where the Puma Open was played.
This year has seen a change in this tournament by way of it being one of four through out New Zealand carrying dual rankings and with the other four dual ranked tournaments being held in Australia.
The big Three kicked off the weekend with it's normal Friday night Alleen Hawkey memorial Mixed pairs at the Timaru South Cossi Club, which received quite a reasonable entry and after a great night of darts by all concerned Dave and Jane Harrington of Canterbury ran out the winners.
As day broke on Saturday most players were up bright and early to make the short trip to the Waimate Town and Country Club where the Puma Open's were being played. Once again the following men's and ladies entries were on par with last year.
The ladies first semi final between Rosalie Ritchie of Christchurch and Irene Martin of Timaru seen Rosalie take it out 4 to 2. In the second semi final last year's winner Christine Hay was up against Sarah Pitama of Christchurch. This match turned into quite a little battle with Sarah eventually taking a close encounter 4 to 3. Both Sarah and Rosalie went into the final without anyone really standing out as the favourite. As the final progressed Rosalie seemed to have it all under control until Sarah put in a great leg starting with a break of 120 which rocked the boat a little but not enough to stop Rosalie taking the final 5 to 2.
The men's semi's seen very close matches both of them going 4 to 3. In the first Dave Harrington of Christchurch played Neville Herbert of Invercargill by this time the standard of darts was getting up there which kept the spectators interested, this semi seen Dave go through to the final. the second semi was not any different with Warren French and Nigel May both of Christchurch putting on another display of great darts. Nigel really did give Frog a run for his money at 4 to 3.
Going into the final Warren went in as favourite, but as the final got under way Dave was to have none of this with the match at 2 to 3 Dave missed his chance to make it 3 all, up to this point the match was even with it now standing at 4 to 2 Warren seen his chance to take the final out with the next leg, this proved to be one of the best legs from both players of the whole tournament, entertainment plus, Dave broke first with 85, Warren followed with a 100, Dave's next was a 100, Warren's next was 180, Dave followed that with a 140 by this time the spectator's had gone quiet and were just watching. Warren's next shot was 100 it left 121. Dave had a 176 left and his third dart clipped the 60 wire and he only scored 100 to leave 76. Warren's next three dart were 20 - 51 and bull. Leg, shot and match as I'm speaking for everyone who watched the final I would like to take this opportunity and congratulations guys plus thanks for a great final.
On Sunday once again there was a great response and turn out for the Timaru South Cosmopolitan Clubs Men's and and Ladies pairs. Both ladies and men's winners were a complete Canterbury affair with Jane Harrington and Sarah Pitama taking out the ladies pairs and the men's pairs being won by Dave Harrington and Stan Kysely,

Book Review: Bounce by Mathew Syed

I am just finishing reading for the second time the book " Bounce " by Mathew Syed. I got this book from early last year. It deals with the science of success. What would be of particular interest to dart players are the sections of the book that deal with practice and the myth of talent. No one is born with more talent that any other to be a great musician or to be a great chess player it is more to do with how many hours of dedicated practise according to scientific research. There is a chapter on choking dealing with why and how it happens. It is the best explanation I have read. If you are interested in improving your level of performance in any field and coping better with pressure and even thriving on that pressure to produce the optimum performance I highly recommend it.

Rex Stone Memorial Pairs 17/3/12

Waikato Puma Open

I left before the finish to drive back to Auckland so I don't have the results to publish. All I know is that Lou Tai won. Craig Dunn pictured was leading the DPNZ ranking men's tables prior to the tournament start and when I left he was in the last 8 so I expect he is still top of the table even if he didn't make last four. If any results come I will publish them or check Big Ken's North Otago site. There were 38 men players and 18 ladies which was a good turn out. The day was well organised by Jeff Wells, Stu Campbell and others.

Internet Darting

Whilst at the Waikato Puma Open over the weekend I met John Kelly pictured. He told me that has set up a pc with camera and is able to participate in International Internet darting leagues from his garage where he has his dartboard. He has played players from Canada and other places. Statistics are recorded and he has found it a useful training tool. He did give me all the details of how to do it but some how I lost the piece of paper on the way home. If you see him about he will tell you what to do.

NZ In World Cup Saturday

This Saturday, NZ Time, Preston Ridd and Warren French ( Frog) will be in Germany competing in the PDC Cash Converters World Cup. In the last PDC world cup in 2010 the NZ representatives were Phil Hazel and Warren Parry. I thought they played pretty well. They beat Poland 6 to 2 in the first round and lost to Wales 6 to 4 in the second round. The game against Wales was close and could have gone either way. Preston and Frog will play Austria in their first round game. It will not be easy as the Austrians are good players. If they can win that they will play the Netherlands which will be very tough. I hope they can go as far and further than Phil or Warren managed. Preston last year had an injury to the shoulder of his throwing arm. He was due to have an operation on it when I last spoke to him at the Club NZ nationals. Hopefully he is fully recovered and the throw is going well.
