Canterbury Open This Weekend

I know at least 5 Aucklanders going down for this. It should be a good weekend. If I cannot hit the winning double I can blame it on the earthquakes. Last year while I was there on the final day they had a 5.4 which was a bit unnerving. I looked out the window to see the cars in the carpark moving up and down.

Renee Stacey Shield Result

Counties Manukau defeated Hamilton Darts Association 9 to 5 in a Renee Stacey Shield challenge held at the Bellbird Tavern, Manuwera Sunday afternoon. It was 2 nil to Counties after the fours and then 3 all after the pairs after Hamilton fought back. Counties then won 6 of the 8 singles.

Sad News

I heard very sad news today that May Houkamau had passed away. May was a member of the Region 2 ladies team for many years and was again in the team this year. She attended a darts practice with the Counties Manukau ladies team, went home and passed away after going to bed.It was totally unexpected. This is a photo of her when she made the team in 2009.
From all the dart players at West City our heart felt sympathy to the family at their loss.

Early Report Capital Puma Open

Wayne Carey has defeated Peter Hunt 5 to 0 in the Capital Puma Open men's singles held at the Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club this evening. This result does not surprise me. I saw Wayne playing some fantastic darts at the North Island Masters last month even though he did not make the last 16. It shows you its all on the day. They could play it again tommorrow and get a different result.
Chrissy Hay defeated Selina Baker-Clemas in the ladies final.
Numbers were up on last year with some players travelling from Auckland, Christchurch and two from Australia. Great money was up for grabs.
I am not sure why they are still playing double starts in these events when any NZ team selected then goes off to play straight start events in Australia and the top man goes to England to do the same. If they went to a straight start some say they would get more NZDC players coming over to the Club NZ and DPNZ system. It will happen eventually I guess. Double start is a bit out of step with international darts. It can be a leveler if the better player can't start.

Jim Holt Memorial Rose Bowl This Thursday 10/5/12

This Thursday, 10th May 2012, the Jim Holt Memorial Rose Bowl will be played for at the West City Darts Association club rooms. The trophy has been played for every year from 1970. Jim Holt was one of the early members of the Association and four generations of his family have played for the club. Jim's son Dave played for the club as have Dave's two twin sons Steve and Glen. Steve is a life member and is pictured with the Rose Bowl. Steve's son Campbell, aged 11, is representing the club and Auckland at this year's NZ Junior and Youth Championships as is Nathan Holt, his cousin and Glen's son.
The Rose bowl is an unusual type of mixed pairs competition. Female members of the club select a male from the club to play but then all names go in the hat and the pairs are redrawn. So you may end up partnering not who you came with. It is a members only competition but at the same time there will be a competition for non members or members who have not got a mixed partner. Registration is by 7.15 pm.
Stephen Holt is Club Co-Captain with Mike Day and has a been a member from his teenage years. He has been on the committee for at least 14 years. Two years ago he was made a life member for his dedicated service. He is still one of the hardest workers in the club. A few years ago he realised a long ambition and made the Auckland Region team to go to the NZDC championships. It was there he was given his nick name by two other team members Wilson Henry and Sam Bryant. He was christened Cha Wee Wee. He got this name because he is not that tall and it was easier to say than chihuahua. That is a small dog in case you do not know. He accepted the name in good humour and wears it proudly on his darts shirts. A few years ago Steve committed a very brave act when one night his neighbours house caught fire. He climbed through a bedroom window into a pitch black smoke filled room and found a young girl trapped inside. He was able to get her out through the window and then himself. She was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. He and other neighbours who helped were given an achievement award for their actions by the Ranui Action group.

Unusual throw

Recently went to see my brother and he showed me a bar he and his flatmates had made under the house they rent. There is nothing unusual about that but being keen on a game of darts they put up the dartboard in the picture and play every Friday night. It does not worry them that the board is the wrong height, the floor is dirt covered in old carpet and you have to stand slightly to left and throw so as to miss the posts you can see in the foreground.
