Auckland Versus NZ Match cancelled.

The New Zealand Dart Council had invited the West City Darts Association to host an exhibition game between a NZ team and and Auckland team during the weekend of the Auckland Open in September. The New Zealand Dart Council has now decided not to hold that match. They had extended the invitation to all Associations hosting NZ ranked tournaments over the next 12 months to host exhibition matches between the NZ team and the local area team. Only one other Association replied to the invitation beside West City. The NZDC because of the lack of interest has decided to scrape the proposal. They will be still offering financial support to the NZ team players to attend the ranking tournaments but there will be no official match with an area team.
Peter Page, treasurer, West City Darts Association stated ' We are disappointed the match will not now go ahead. The Auckland players that were selected for the match would have looked forward to the challenge and felt honoured to be part of it. We have been fundraising to offer prize money to the players and to provide shirts. We will now redirect that money into another project. We are discussing at the moment a proposal to have a series of 10 singles tournaments, one a month for 10 months throughout 2012 at various venues in the Auckland area to be known as the Super Series of Darts. Money from entries and other sources will be pooled and paid out at the final tournament. Points would be accumulated by players throughout the ten tournaments in a similar way to the NZDC issue ranking points. The player with the most points would get the most money and so on. The proposal is in the early stages and we need the support of players and administrators throughout the Auckland area. If it is not forthcoming West City may run it on its own.'
