Monty Tuhua and Jannette Jonathon won the men's and ladies North Island Masters singles titles earlier today at the Hastings Darts Association club rooms, Hastings. Monty played Rob Szabo in the final of the men's and won 5 legs to 3. Rob won the bull and started first hitting a 15 darter and finishing on 80. Monty replied with a 15 darter of his own finishing on 120. Rob then hit a 17 darter finishing on 40. Monty replied with another 15 darter finishing on 101 and hitting a 180. Monty then broke throw and hit a 19 darter with a 40 finish. Rob broke back and hit another 17 darter finishing on 40. Monty then hit an 18 darter finishing with 88 on the bull. He followed it up with a 19 darter finishing on 40 in the deciding leg.
Monty had defeated Peter Hunt, last years winner and the NZ number 1 player in the semi final. Peter in an earlier game came close to hitting a 9 darter. He put his first 7 darts in the triple 20 and then missed triple 19 to have a shot at double 12. Rob Szabo defeated Craig Caldwell in his semi final.
In the 2009 dart season Monty finished third in the NZ Dart Council rankings without doing any practice and just relying on match play. Recently he played in the South Island Masters and had a poor showing. He decided he better practice. For this tournament he practiced 20 minutes a day and it seemed to pay off.
Jannette had it mainly her own way defeating Mihi Pike 5 legs to nil in her final. She finished the last leg on 83. She defeated Polly Luke in the semi final. Mihi had defeated Lorene Earnshaw in her semi final.
