Bernie Smith Wins DPNZ and DPA Open

Bernie Smith of New Zealand defeated Steve MacArthur of Australia in the final of the DPNZ and DPA Open yesterday at the Otahuhu Working Men's Club 6 to 1. The open was a warm-up for today's Oceanic Masters where the winning player gets entry in to the PDC world championship in London in December.

There were only 30 players but it was a top quality field and no easy games. There were 16 that qualified for the main round and some extremely good players who did not qualify. The qualifiers were John Sinclair, Shane Tichowitsch ( Aus), Dean McGladdery (Aus), Steve MacArthur (Aus), Bernie Smith, Bill Fergus, Richie Komene, Warren Parry, Rob Szabo, Preston Ridd, Tony Lee, Warren French, Richard Te Whero, John Dudunski Craig Caldwell and Tom Williams.

In the final Bernie was in top form while Steve's form from the earlier rounds had faded. He could not quite find the triple 20 with any consistency. Bernie had several great finishes and finished the last leg on 92 by hitting the bull, a single 10 and double 16.
